Your privacy
This guide describes the Pillars phone app. The website does the same calculations, but some screens and features work differently or aren't here yet.
Your birth date, time and place say a lot about you. So Pillars keeps them where they belong: in your hand.
Everything happens on your phone
- No account. You never sign up, log in or give an email.
- No server. There's no Pillars server holding your details. The astronomy, the time zones and the solar terms are all worked out on your phone.
- The city search is built in. When you type your birthplace, the app looks it up in a list it carries. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- It works offline. In airplane mode, your chart works just the same.
Locked, even on the phone
Everything the app saves (people, relationships, events, notes and settings) lives in one file, encrypted with AES-256-GCM, a strong, standard kind of lock. The key is made the first time you open the app and kept in your phone's secure key storage. Other apps can't read it.
Ads
The app shows ads, through Google's AdMob. Ads never receive your birth date, time or place. They only load when you're online. Offline, the app works exactly the same, just without ads.
In Settings, Ad privacy lets you choose whether you see personalized ads.
When an ad is ready, exporting a PDF means watching a short one first. If none can load, offline for example, the export is never blocked.
Other people's details
When you add someone, their chart stays on your phone too, under the same lock. The app asks you to confirm that you have their permission. Please do ask. It's their information.
Your camera and notifications
The camera is used only to scan another person's code. All the Notifications, if you turn them on, are made on your phone. Nothing goes out to send them.
When something does leave
Only when you decide, and only what you choose:
- Your QR code, when you show it: a name and birth details, phone to phone.
- A PDF report, when you share it.
- A backup file, when you export it. It's locked with a passphrase only you know.
Clearing it all
To remove one person, open their page and tap Delete person. It deletes their chart, notes and relationships, and the events they're part of. To start over, go to Settings and tap Delete everything. All people, events, notes and settings on this phone are deleted. That can't be undone, so make a backup first if you might want them back.
