Why your BaZi year can differ from the calendar year

4 min

The BaZi year doesn't start on January 1 or at Chinese New Year. It starts at Lì Chūn (立春, Start of Spring), the instant the Sun reaches 315° along its apparent path. That happens around February 4 every year.

What it means for you

If you were born in January or early February, before Lì Chūn, your Year pillar belongs to the previous year. Someone born on January 27, 1990, for example, has the Year pillar of 1989.

Months are solar too

BaZi months start at the twelve main solar terms, every 30° of the Sun. That's why a BaZi month runs, for example, from October 8 to November 7, not from the 1st to the 31st.

Calculated for your place

Each term happens at the same instant worldwide, but the local time differs. The app calculates it with astronomy and the time zone tables, for your city.
