The symbolic stars

4 min

They aren't stars in the sky. Think of them as little flags the tradition plants in a chart. When certain characters meet, a flag goes up with a theme on it, like help, study or travel.

In Chinese they're called shén shà (神煞).

How a star turns up

Each star follows a simple old rule. Most start from your Day Master, or from the branch of your Year or Day pillar, and point to one branch. If that branch is anywhere in your chart, the star is there. Yin Yang Mismatch works differently: it depends on your exact Day pillar.

The ones you'll meet most

On the Symbols screen each star has a short plain label, shown here in quotes.

  • Nobleman (天乙貴人), "Helpful people": elders and good guides who turn up when you need them most.
  • Academic Star (文昌), "Study and writing": reading, writing and learning come easily.
  • Study Hall (學堂), "Love of learning": a taste for learning that lasts all your life.
  • Golden Carriage (金輿), "Comfort and support": a comfortable life that grows with the years.
  • General Star (將星), "Steady leadership": you lead without shouting.
  • Canopy (華蓋), "Depth and solitude": art, faith and deep questions, and time alone.
  • Peach Blossom (桃花), "Charm and social pull": people are drawn to you. It's the star of romance.
  • Travelling Horse (驛馬), "Movement and change": trips, moves and new starts.
  • Red Phoenix (紅鸞) and Heavenly Joy (天喜), "Celebrations" and "Happy occasions": weddings, parties and good news.

The ones that ask for a little care

  • Sudden Turn (劫煞), "Sudden demands": unexpected costs or changes, and a quick mind to get out of them. Leave some room in your plans.
  • Lost Spirit (亡神), "Scattered attention": things can slip away unnoticed. It also gives wit and the ability to keep a secret.
  • Yin Yang Mismatch (陰陽差錯), "Mismatched timing": the tradition links it to friction with in-laws, or love that comes at an odd moment. It's there to know, not to fear.

Six more in the full reading

The full reading adds Prosperity (祿), earning your own bread; Monthly Virtue (月德) and Heavenly Virtue (天德), two stars of protection; Lonely Star (孤辰) and Retreat Star (寡宿), independence and a rich inner life; and Void (空亡), where things weigh less than they seem and ask for focus.

When a star switches on

A star in your chart is always there, like a trait. But each year brings its own branch. When that branch is the one a star points to, the tradition says the star switches on for that year.

  • On the Chart tab, open Symbols. Each star says where it sits in your chart and which years switch it on next. "Switching on soon" lists the next few.
  • On Today, an "Active symbol" appears when this year switches one on.
  • Tap a star to see the rule behind it.

How to take them

Stars are the seasoning, not the meal. The heart of a chart is still your Day Master and the five elements. Not having a star doesn't mean you lack what it stands for: plenty of people without the Academic Star love books. And if your chart has none of the stars the app uses, the screen simply says so.
