The five elements

Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金) and Water (水) aren't substances: they are five phases of one cycle.

The generating cycle

Wood feeds Fire, Fire leaves Earth (ash), Earth holds Metal, Metal gathers Water (dew), and Water nourishes Wood.

The controlling cycle

Wood holds Earth, Earth contains Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.

In your chart

• Count: the eight visible characters, by element.
• Model: a weighting that also counts hidden stems. It's the app's choice, not a traditional verdict.

A missing visible element doesn't mean you "lack" something. It often appears hidden in a branch, or arrives in a decade or a year.
